Women's History Month 2021
Homes for Haringey is celebrating Women's History Month, which runs from 1 March to 31 March.
We are encouraging both women and men to share their stories across our social media channels and other resident engagement platforms.
On March 8, Homes for Haringey celebrated International Women's Day by running a campaign to celebrate our female employees who have broken through barriers.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2021 was "Choose to Challenge", recognising the need to call out gender bias and inequality. As women around the world battle the social, economic and political fallout from Covid-19, the need for this is greater than ever.
We are also encouraging residents challenge inequality call out bias, question stereotypes, and help forge an inclusive world.
A story of innovation and resilience:
Yasmin is Homes for Haringey resident choosing to challenge the obstacles that stopped her from gaining work experience and helping make a difference in the community at the same time she shares her story:
My name is Yasmin, I am 23 and the founder of Undiscovered LDN.
Undiscovered LDN was a beautiful result of what was a stressful and difficult time in my life. I studied business and event management and experience really counts in this field. I had encountered numerous rejections for my work placement in my third year of university despite having the skills and passion needed.
What inspired me to start a fashion show was just a chance meeting on a simple day out in Camden. I saw a small clothing store whose pieces looked like they were meant for a runway and not a shop window. Whilst speaking to the owner I asked if they had ever done runway before to which they answered no. In that moment I told them I was going to organise one and they had to take part.
Undiscovered Fashion Show started off as a one-time project but after seeing the looks of joy and accomplishment on the faces of the designers, models and the whole team; I knew it couldn’t just be a one-time event. Our feedback from all participants and attendees have fuelled our drive every year to make it better than the last.
We spend months planning, talking to and preparing our upcoming designers. As often this will be their first time showing their designs to the public on a runway. We incorporate team building and rapport into our journey and by the end of the show they grow so much in confidence that you would think this is something they have been doing all their lives. The confidence they leave with is inspirational to us and it is privilege to be able to contribute a platform to showcase their skills.
My main motivation behind creating a platform like Undiscovered is recognising there are many people out there (like I was) just waiting for a platform/opportunity and we can aid in their journey.
This year will be our fourth fashion show and we are so looking forward to it.
This platform has provided a chance for so many people who have displayed their talents by modelling the clothes designed on the runway, singing/rapping at the fashion show event, providing guests with food and helping to promote local businesses. Through this show, some of the designers have gained clients and the performers/models have gained further valuable work experience and jobs in their industry.
