Building trade apprenticeships

Homes for Haringey’s in-house repairs team employs over 250 staff including approximately 200 trades people and officers. Almost 50, who are now fully qualified, started their careers as Haringey apprentices. The apprenticeship scheme started in the mid seventies. The trades covered are bricklaying, carpentry, electrical, plastering and plumbing.

Entry requirements

There is no longer an upper age as the government has removed the previous age limit of 24. Applicants must have a reasonable level of English and Mathematics to be eligible for the course. All shortlisted candidates are required to take an initial Key Skills test at the College of North London.

Successful apprentices spend one full day at college learning the theory, and gain practical experience four days per week working alongside qualified and experienced craft operatives. Work can be carried out in depots and in or around council homes both occupied and empty.

Qualifications lead to NVQ levels 2 and 3 over a three year period.
