renting a garage

If you need somewhere to keep your car or van, you may be able to rent a garage near you. Your local housing office can tell you where your nearest garages are and what the waiting list is like.

When we allocate garages, priority goes to council tenants living on the estate. If there is no tenant on the list, we will offer the vacancy to the next person on the list.

To rent a garage, simply phone or contact your Tenancy Management Officer. They will send you a form and put you onto the waiting list. Alternatively you can fill in and send the form now, by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

When you sign the tenancy agreement for the garage, you will be asked to produce a valid vehicle registration number and some identity.

Garage measurements

Most garages are designed for a standard car and measure 4.88m x 2.44m (16’x8’), but a few are larger, and can accommodate a van. Rents are based on size and facilities, such as internal lighting.

Points to consider

• You can only rent a garage for a motor vehicle, not for other purposes such as storage
• You must not store materials that catch fire easily in a garage
• You cannot keep petrol or gas bottles in a garage

Reduced garage rent

You may be able to reduce your rent on a garage if you are one of the following:

• 60 years or over
• Disabled, and receiving Mobility Allowance and/or Disability Living Allowance
• Renting a garage in an area of low demand*

*Some areas are difficult to let, so to encourage tenants we will consider a discounted rate. This does not usually apply to an area where more than 50% of the garages are already let. If we agree to a reduction, it will apply to all garages, including those already let.

Please note: You cannot receive more than one discount on any single garage. If a garage rent has already been reduced through age or disability, we will replace the reduction with the low demand reduction.
