Summerhill Village gets new garden bench
Tuesday 12 January 2010
Snow and ice could not detract residents of Summerhill Village supported housing scheme from receiving a brand new plaque inscribed garden bench last Friday (8th January). The six foot bench was requested by residents and was donated by decent homes contractors for South Tottenham, Apollo London.
Summerhill is the first supported housing scheme in Haringey to receive external improvements under the decent homes programme. Ward councillor, Isidoros Diakides, joined Apollo representatives and staff from Homes for Haringey’s Asset Management team to unveil the bench in the courtyard.

Last month each of the 31 residents received a makeover package of new front and back doors as well as double glazed windows in their maisonette properties as part of the decent homes improvement programme.
Over £138,000 has been invested in external improvement works at the scheme. The refurbishment was brought forward following a successful bid to accelerate some of Haringey’s Decent Homes funding allocation from the Homes and Communities Agency. New windows have also been installed in the communal lounge which is used by all residents for activities including card games, coffee mornings, bingo, and keep fit/dance classes.
Ola Akinfe, Executive Director of Asset Management, said: “This is the first of 19 supported housing schemes that will benefit from the decent homes programme in 2010 and it is great to see how satisfied the residents are with the work we are doing and the improvements to their homes.”

Surveys to determine internal improvements to kitchens, bathrooms, wiring and heating will be carried out from April 2010.
“Resident Bill Guy also praised the works. “Having new windows and doors has made a big difference. Our homes are so much more welcoming and comfortable and the whole local area looks so much better for it. When the weather gets warmer, we’ll sit on the bench admiring the view of the outside of our homes.”
Apollo divisional director, Adam Stevens, added: “It was a pleasure to carry out these works at Summerhill and for this to be the first supported housing scheme to be completed in Haringey. The residents were really appreciative of the new windows and doors and were a joy to carry out the work for.”
The dedication on the brass plaque reads: Presented to the residents of Summerhill Road sheltered scheme by Apollo Ltd.
