Residents wanted for Homes for Haringey Board
Wednesday 4 April 2007
Are you interested in getting involved in local housing matters and having a real influence on the lives of thousands of tenants and leaseholders?
Homes for Haringey, the Arms Length Management Organisation, responsible for managing council housing in Haringey, is on the lookout for six local residents to join its Board this summer.
The Board has a crucial role to play in ensuring Homes for Haringey delivers a high quality housing service and operates in the best interests of tenants and the local community.
Homes for Haringey took responsibility for managing council housing stock in April 2006. Since then resident board members have been involved in a number of high profile activities including overseeing the bid made for money from the government to bring homes up to a decent standard and monitoring Homes for Haringey’s performance.
The six resident board member positions include one sheltered housing tenant, one leaseholder, and a tenant from each of four areas - North Tottenham, South Tottenham, Hornsey and Wood Green.
Candidates must live in the borough, be over 18, and be a council tenant or leaseholder. Training sessions on the role and responsibilities of Board members and what residents should do if they want to stand for election are now running.
Nominations will be open between May 8 and June 1. All council tenants and leaseholders including joint tenants and leaseholders will be able to vote in the elections, held in July.
Those elected will join five independent experts and five council nominees who sit on the Board of Homes for Haringey.
Cllr Diakides, executive member for housing, said: "Homes for Haringey has a challenging year ahead and it needs a strong residents’ voice at its heart if it is to get it right. We need residents who are really committed as the role involves a lot of responsibility, time commitment and plenty of hard work, but for the right people this would be a lifetime opportunity to influence the quality of life of thousands of fellow residents.”
Mike Jones, Chair, Homes for Haringey, added:
“This is a real opportunity for local people who are motivated to serve fellow tenants and leaseholders to come and sit on the board of Homes for Haringey.”
