Residents celebrate 3rd Community International Day
Tuesday 22 September 2009
Over 200 local residents turned out to celebrate the diversity of their community at the third annual Wood Green International Day last Saturday (19 September). The annual street party, held in the grounds of Commerce Road, N22, provided something for all residents of all ages, allowing families and children to celebrate with their local neighbours.
This free event was organised by Homes for Haringey in partnership with the Council’s Neighbourhood Management team. The afternoon party featured a talent show, basketball tournament, cycle repair sessions, a design your own t-shirt stall, plus music and prizes. Free West Indian, Turkish and Indian food was on hand, tying in with the multicultural theme which also saw some tenants arrive in their national costume. Children were treated to an afternoon of face painting, eco activities, clown games, mask making and bouncy castle merriment. Exotic costumes were provided by Maria Joseph from the Mardi Gras Arts Workshop in Tottenham.

Winston Reid, Head of Tenancy Management West for Homes for Haringey, said: “International day is a wonderful opportunity for residents of all nationalities to celebrate their local community, experience the cultures of others and to get more information about a range of local services provided by Homes for Haringey and the Council.”
Residents and visitors also received advice from local organisations representing Hearthstone, 4YP for teenage sexual health matters, decent homes, security and bike maintenance. Decent Homes Contractor, Mulalley will donate prizes for the best suggestions of the ‘name the new community centre’ competition. Leaflets, goodie bags and samples from stalls managed by Homes for Haringey, the Bounds Green Safer Neighbourhood team, Mulalley, Hearthstone, Asian Action group, Fairtrade, Environmental Resources and Cycle Training UK, were also available.
Local resident and chair of the Commerce Road Residents’ Association, Teresa Orosun-Gay, said: “The day was a great success. The overwhelming feedback from the residents was a resounding ‘this was even better than last year’ and they ‘can’t wait until next year.’ ”
