Phyllis Knapman has celebrated turning 100 with a special card from the Queen along with a visit from the Chief Executive of Homes for Haringey, Paul Bridge.

The centurion welcomed Paul into her bungalow in Muswell Hill where she has lived for over 30 years. The former Gas Board secretary and keen seamstress was born in Wood Green on 11 May 1910.

Following a dinner and party thrown by friends from her local church, Phyllis was thrilled to receive her birthday telegram from the Queen. It was presented to her by the local postman who has delivered her post for more than 30 years.

She was never married and attributes the secret to her long life as healthy living, particularly eating beetroots which she developed a taste for during war time rationing.

Phyllis said: “I’ve had a fantastic birthday and many kind visitors. Even at 100 I am still enjoying my hobbies which include gardening and using my sewing machine to make dresses.”

Paul popped in for a chat and to present her a special bouquet, he said “I was truly delighted and honoured to meet such a vibrant lady.”
