New Homes for Haringey Board Members Announced

Haringey tenants Phil Goodwin, Laurie White, Georgina Walters and Paula Goodwin have been elected alongside supported housing tenant, Mary Marchi and leaseholder, Alena Breckova.

The voting, which closed on Monday (13 September), saw a record rise in turnout with over 60% of supported housing tenants, 47% of tenants and 45% of leaseholders casting votes.

The newly elected Board members will take up their posts at the Annual General Meeting on 27 September.

Mike Jones, Chair, Homes for Haringey, said: “We are pleased to welcome the new Board members at this exciting time. These are local residents committed to influencing and improving the quality of life for their fellow tenants and leaseholders.”

A total of 22 candidates applied to the Board and following interviews 11 stood in the election. Those selected will initially stand for 3 years.

The Board is made up of five independent experts and five council nominees. It has overall responsibility on how the organisation is run and how improvements are delivered under the Management Agreement with the Council.

To qualify as a board member candidates had to live in the borough, be over 18, and a council tenant or leaseholder. Training sessions on the role and responsibilities of Board members were also provided.

In June 2010 over 130 local residents attended free Board member training workshops. The five day sessions were designed to help potential applicants understand the role and duties of a Board member. The workshops covered:

  • An introduction to Homes for Haringey
  • Personal effectiveness
  • Having effective meetings
  • Making the ALMO work
  • Preparing for election
