New community centre for Campsbourne residents

Wednesday 10 December 2008

A new community centre at the heart of the Campsbourne Estate was opened on Friday 5 December as part of Homes for Haringey’s Decent Homes programme.

The first stage of a two-phase handover of the Eastfield Community Centre in Eastfield Road, Hornsey, N8, took place at a launch event. Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr John Bevan, officially opened the centre in the presence of Homes for Haringey Chief Executive, Paul Bridge, and Simon Underwood, Business Unit Director of Wates Living Space, as well as Homes for Haringey Board members and local community representatives.

The opening of the Eastfield Community Centre

The Eastfield Community Centre is funded by Homes for Haringey, in partnership with contractors, Wates, who are carrying out the works for the Decent Homes programme.

Also launched on the day was ‘Camspace’. This is an area within the building that will be dedicated to voluntary organisations funded by Haringey Council which will share the space. Services on offer will range from the Citizens’ Advice Bureau to training and job agencies.

The building in Eastfield Road had until recently been in a state of disrepair. Wates has refurbished the building and will use a section of it as a site office. When the Decent Homes programme at Campsbourne is completed, Wates will hand over the entire building to the local community.

Paul Bridge, Chief Executive of Homes for Haringey, said, “This is a situation where everyone benefits. Wates will have a site office at the centre of the community for the duration of the works, and the community will benefit from a newly refurbished building thereafter. In the meantime, local residents will still benefit, as the shared space will house a range of voluntary organisations during the day and can be booked by local community groups in the evenings.”

Simon Underwood, Business Unit Director of Wates Living Space, said: "We are pleased to be involved with the refurbishment of Eastfield Community Centre as part of our Decent Homes work for Homes for Haringey. This is the first step to providing a long-term sustainable solution for the Centre which we will develop with Homes for Haringey and Haringey Council and local residents. We would also like to acknowledge the support from the Wates Family Enterprise Trust in providing funding to Haringey for a Youth Community Worker to help us engage with the community in the development of the longer-term use. This approach demonstrates the commitment of the Wates Group to contributing to the communities in which we work."
