Homes for Haringey takes apprentices under its wing
Thursday 20 November 2008
Six young people have beaten off stiff competition to gain one of Homes for Haringey’s coveted apprenticeships.
Liam Barker and Eamoin Meaney (both carpenters), Alexander Manton (electrician), Ryan Mattis (plasterer), and Lee Tan and Matthew Warry (plumbers) were chosen from almost 100 young people who applied for the three-year placements.
The apprentices, aged between 17 and 21, have joined Homes for Haringey’s repairs service, based at Lordship Lane Depot in Tottenham.

As well as learning their chosen trade one day a week at college, the apprentices will initially get hands-on experience refurbishing empty homes, moving on to responsive repairs in occupied properties to achieve NVQ level 2 or 3 qualifications.
Each apprentice is partnered with an experienced tradesperson who acts as a mentor to monitor their progress.
Homes for Haringey’s repairs service employs around 200 tradespeople. Almost 50, who are now fully qualified, started their careers as Haringey apprentices. A further eight will complete their apprenticeships by December 2008.
Executive Director of Repairs, Bob Watts, said: "Homes for Haringey is committed to helping address the manual skills shortage in the UK building industry, so we’re delighted to be taking on another six high calibre apprentices.”
