Successful £1.4m bid for Homes for Haringey
Homes for Haringey has successfully bid for £1.4 million of Government funding to provide energy saving cavity wall insulation for thousands of homes across Haringey. Up to 1800 priority homes, consisting of high rise blocks, are now being identified across the borough for the works.
The money for the programme will be delivered over two years, and will improve the energy rating efficiency of residents’ homes and cut domestic fuel costs. Local contractors, providing value for money, are expected to carry out the works
Ola Akinfe, Executive Director of Asset Management, said:
“We are really pleased that local residents will reap the benefits by having their homes insulated and more energy efficient in the coming winters. Not only will this lead to a reduction in fuel bills but it will also cut carbon emissions.
“We estimate that around one third of the heat lost in a home is through the walls, so cavity wall insulation is the one of most effective way of reducing heat loss. Homes for Haringey remains fully committed to tackling climate change.”
The bid was made under the Government’s Social Housing Energy Savings Programme. The organisation is now looking to appoint contractors to carry out the work, which is expected to start from September 2009 and complete by next June.
This funding will also complement the current £200m Decent Homes refurbishment programme and the British Gas ‘Here to Help’ programme which the organisation has run over the last five years.
In addition, some funding may also be earmarked for insulating low and medium rise properties. These homes have not been cavity filled through the former ‘British Gas ‘Here to Help’ scheme, or other programmes due to the additional costs associated with the access and construction particularly of high rise blocks.
