Tuesday 27 July 2010
A youth engagement project led by Homes for Haringey has won the organisation its fourth prestigious Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) award.
The ‘Young Advisors’ project - a funded joint collaboration between Homes for Haringey, Neighbourhood Management and the NDC - won the TPAS National Best Practice in Youth Involvement Award at an awards ceremony last Saturday (24th July). Akbar Choudhury and Thanh Nyugen are Homes for Haringey’s Young Advisors, providing a valuable youth friendly perspective on current services and proposed projects. They have also helped to ensure Homes for Haringey has a strong approach to involving young people in the future by working on the organisation’s first ever Youth Strategy.

The project beat off competition from three other shortlisted finalists in the National Youth Involvement category. Homes for Haringey Community Outreach Officer, Marlon Bruce, worked with the Young Advisors. He said: “I am delighted for them that they have won. It’s a fantastic achievement and I’d like to thank them for their hard work. This has been a great example of how partnership working can make a real difference.”
Thanh, one of the winning Young Advisors, said: “It felt good to win the award, and achieve the status of being the best in youth involvement nationally.”
As part of the initiative Young Advisors receive over 30 hours on a training programme which leads to a national Asdan award. The programme covers topics such community strategies, citizenship, carrying out consultations and community mapping. Across Haringey, there are over 40 trained Young Advisors aged between 13 and 22.
