Homes for Haringey issues first dog fouling notice

Wednesday 2 December 2009

Enforcement trained officers from Homes for Haringey have issued their first £75 fixed penalty notice for dog fouling in the Northumberland Park area, N17.

The penalty charge was issued to  a local resident on 27 October after she was witnessed allowing the dog, a Staffordshire Bull terrier, to foul on the estate. A patrolling anti social behaviour officer from Haringey Council saw the woman not clearing up after her dog and reported it to Homes for Haringey’s estate service manager who issued the notice.

Since August 2009, 10 Homes for Haringey estate services managers have received training from Haringey Council’s Street Enforcement Service. They now have the authority to issue fixed penalty notices to anyone who unlawfully deposits litter, waste or allows their dogs to foul without clearing the mess on their estates.

The resident has accepted the notice and agreed to pay the £75 penalty, rather than face a criminal prosecution in the courts.

Peter Purdie, Head of Estate Services, said: “We are committed to encouraging residents and visitors to act responsibly. Allowing dogs to foul without clearing the mess is unacceptable and against the law for which we can and will take action. Whilst we accept there are a minority of irresponsible dog owners that allow this to happen, we cannot take the risk of this unsightly mess and hygiene hazard to continue. “

Residents should report such incidents to their local tenancy management office on 020 8489 0000.
