Thursday 7 October 2010

Homemade and grown pumpkin soup, cakes, fruit and vegetables were on display as local residents in South Tottenham celebrated the official opening of their new community garden in Helston Court, N15.

The harvest launch took place last Saturday, 2nd October. Green fingered residents from the surrounding area came together to show off their home grown crop of tomatoes, beans, potatoes, marrows, carrots, brussels sprouts and even watermelon.

The ‘Helston Court Growers’ welcomed visitors, including Cabinet Member for Housing Services Cllr John Bevan, trustees of the Bridge Renewal Trust, Rachel Hughes and Yvonne Denny, and local ward members Cllrs David Browne and Zena Brabazon. All were treated to pumpkin soup and other delicacies grown in the thriving garden. The event also included a display showing the progress of the garden over the year, from a derelict and unused space, to a green oasis in the middle of Tottenham.

The garden was formerly neglected space over disused garages which attracted anti social behaviour. The Bridge Renewal Trust, a new local charity, secured funding from the Bridge NDC to secure the site with new fencing. The renovation also included the installation of raised beds using railway sleepers and topsoil, erecting a gazebo and shed and purchasing tools, seeds and plants.

Chair of the Helston Court Growers, Isobel Allpress, thanked everybody for attending and their support in ensuring the garden was established. Cllr Bevan, added: “The residents have worked really hard, planting, watering and weeding – transforming the space into a lush and thriving garden full of healthy fruit and vegetables, many congratulations and well done.”

New members are welcome to join the Helston Court Growers. For more information email lainya@bridgerenewaltrust.org.uk
