Haringey Partnership praised for gas safety

Tuesday 30 November 2010

Homes for Haringey and its gas contractor, Kinetics, have been exclusively commended for a joint partnership approach in raising awareness of gas safety to Haringey tenants. The partnership was recognised at November’s annual stakeholders event of the UK Gas Safety regulator, Gas Safety Register, formerly known as Corgi. The award was the only one presented which reflects the unique partnership approach with a supplier.

Both organisations have brought the message of gas safety straight to the homes of Haringey residents. Over the last year, Kinetics have distributed Homes for Haringey leaflets to all tenants, attended community events and spoke at residents’ repairs panels about the importance of annual gas checks.

The housing management organisation currently has a 100% gas safety record which it manages on behalf of Haringey Council. As well as widespread gas safety publicity, the internal gas monitoring team start the process of corresponding with tenants three months prior to the expiry date of gas certificates.

Debbie Storey, Contracts Manager, Kinetics Group, said:  “We have worked diligently with Homes for Haringey to ensure that tenants are fully aware that a free gas safety check makes sense and could be life saving. Next year we are committed to meeting with wider groups of residents in Haringey to ensue we continue to maintain our 100% record.”

The Gas Safe Register replaced the Corgi Gas Register on 1 April 2009.

Gowan Turnbull, Mechanical Engineering Manager, Homes for Haringey, added: “Homes for Haringey and Kinetics Group are delighted to have received this recognition from the gas safety regulator for the UK. It confirms our partnership commitment to 100% gas safety for our tenants. This award echoes the very recent acknowledgement of our high ranking gas safety status from both the Audit Commission and the British Safety Council. Our efforts will continue and we will maintain our policy of legal action to enforce these vital safety measures.”

Background information

As part of Haringey’s annual safety check, engineers do a thorough check of all gas pipes and gas appliances including boilers, cookers and fires and certify the property safe. By law, the gas supply pipes and gas boiler in each tenanted home must be inspected by the landlord once a year. Only if these are found to be safe and up to standard is a 12 month gas safety certificate, the Landlord’s Gas Safety Record(LGSR), issued.

Almost 16,000 properties are inspected every year.

Home for Haringey employs two gas contractors: Kinetics and Oakray. Kinetics covers Supported Housing properties and properties in the North Tottenham area; Oakray covers Wood Green and South Tottenham including Broadwater Farm.
