Haringey children learn site safety

Tuesday 24 March 2009

Children at Earlsmead Primary School learnt the importance of building site safety with a special talk from Homes for Haringey’s decent homes contractor, Apollo London.

In a special assembly this week, the whole school enjoyed a health and safety talk by Marilyn Garber, Community Investment Manager and Katy Creed, Resident Liaison Officer, of Apollo. During the 20-minute session, they learned about the dangers of playing on building sites and the everyday precautions taken by construction workers to avoid accidents and injury.

As part of the presentation, some of the children were invited to try on health and safety clothing, such as fluorescent jackets, hard hats, goggles and gloves.

They were also invited to design a Danger sign for building sites, and the best designs will receive a prize.

Apollo is one of four contractor companies working with Homes for Haringey to bring the borough’s housing stock up to the government’s Decent Homes standard.  They are about to start work on Year 2 of the five-year programme in the South Tottenham area.

Homes for Haringey Chief Executive, Paul Bridge, said: “It is never too early for children to learn how to be safe, and we are grateful to Apollo for teaching local youngsters invaluable lessons that will benefit them in the future.”

Katy Creed said: “The morning was fun to do and we are happy that the children enjoyed themselves.”
