Goods seized in clear up

Wednesday 26 May 2010

A removal firm contracted by Homes for Haringey took away a number of household items from the communal areas of Mountview Court, N15, on Monday 24 May.

The housing management organisation is taking action against tenants who break their tenancy agreement by creating hazards which could potentially block escape routes.

Letters and posters were sent to residents in advance warning them of the action being planned.

The items taken from the block in South Tottenham included prams, bikes, scooters and a chest of drawers. The crackdown was carried out by the removal firm accompanied by Homes for Haringey Estate Services and Tenancy Management Officers. Any items left in the communal corridors, walkways, landings and stairway areas of the block, consisting of 80 flats, were removed.

All items seized will be stored for up to one month before disposal if no claim is made. Tenants will be charged removal and storage costs to retrieve their goods.

Jackie Thomas, Executive Director of Housing management, said the action has the full support of the Fire Services and Police Safer Neighbourhood team, adding:

"This situation is unacceptable. Leaving these items can delay or even stop access to the block by the fire service."

Further action to remove items left in communal areas will be extended to all Haringey estates and blocks in the future.
