Monday 14 December 2009

Staff and contractors responsible for ensuring all council homes in Haringey have valid gas safety certificates have celebrated achieving the 100% milestone.

Bob Watts, Executive Director of Repairs, used the opportunity at a special lunch to thank contractors (Kinetics and Oakray), tenancy management, design and engineering staff and officers from the Council’s legal and environmental health services.

Homes for Haringey celebrates 100% gas safety

All homes in Haringey were made compliant in August 2009. The 100% milestone record has been maintained ever since. Bob described the achievement as a unique team effort involving contractors, Homes for Haringey and the Council, adding: “The lunch was a well deserved thank you to all those who contributed to achieving 100% gas safety in 16,000 Council owned homes managed by Homes for Haringey. It was a great team effort.”

By law, the gas supply pipes and gas boiler in each tenanted home must be inspected by the landlord once a year. Only if these are found to be safe and up to standard is a gas safety certificate (CP12) issued. Homes for Haringey manages this process on behalf of Haringey Council.

To get in to the few homes to which repeated requests for access had been ignored or denied, Homes for Haringey applied to the court for warrants to force entry. A range of other innovative measures are used prior to resorting to taking legal action and these are successful in most cases.
