Who’s your local Haringey unsung hero or heroine?
Again, this year, we asked residents and staff to nominate theirlocal hero or heroine - someone who's gone that extra mile to help their community. Our criteria are that the nominee can be an individual or a group who has:
- run a successful, creative community activity
- worked with us to improve an estate or local area
- got others involved in their community
- ran a positive community campaign or
- represented their community to improve services.
The winners were announced at our special awards ceremony on 15 May at the Haringey Sixth Form Centre. Find out all about the winners. (link to news release).

Resident Volunteer Awards 2011
We held our third annual Resident Volunteer Awards event at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham on Thursday, 10 March. The event was attended by almost 150 people and was sponsored by Homes for Haringey’s Decent Homes contractors.
The final eight winners were selected from over 28 nominations. They are:
Rose Cameronn, Palace Gates Residents’ Association
Celia Cunney, Stokley Court Residents’ Association
Yvonne Denny, Edgecot Grove Residents’ Association
Pauleen Lijertwood, Milton Road
Andrea Holden, Frederick Messer Residents’ Association
Phil Goodwin, Homes for Haringey resident Board member
Mary Marchi, Homes for Haringey resident Board member.
A group award went to the Sandlings Youth Committee.
The Special Achievement award went to Quentin Given, chair of the Ferry Lane Action Group.
Cabinet Member for Housing Services, Councillor John Bevan presented nine residents associations’ with framed certificates and special grants of up to £500. All successfully landed funding to pay for new equipment or projects in their communities.
Music and entertainment was provided by Adreia Suores, a Portuguese born R& B artist and Lady Lykez, a North London rap and hip hop artist. There was also a category to honour the work of resident liaison officers from the Decent Homes programme. The overall award went to Gillian Jones of Mulalley & Co. There were runners up awards for Katy Creed from Apollo and Elaine Lister from Wates.

Resident Volunteers Awards 2010
Haringey’s unsung heroes have been recognised at a glittering awards ceremony acknowledging their extensive voluntary contributions to their local communities. Organised by Homes for Haringey’s resident involvement team, the second annual awards ceremony was held at the Decorium last Thursday, 25 February. The event, which included a three course dinner, was attended by almost 150 people. For the second year running, the celebration was sponsored by Homes for Haringey’s Decent Homes contractors.
The final eight winners were selected from over 28 nominations. They are: Akbar Choudhary and Thanh Nguyen, Edgecot Grove Young Advisors; Barbara Cordwell, Chair, Headcorn, Tenterden, Beaufoy and Gretton Road Residents’ Association (HTBG); Ronald Dalliday, Advocate, Northumberland Park; Anthony Jackson, Chair, Residents’ Repair Panel; Alexander Hearn, Chair, Mildura Court Residents’ Association; Anne Goodhew, Leasehold Panel member; Derek Stott, Treasurer, the Crescent Residents’ Association; and Susan Rice, Association of Tenant Representatives.

All the winners were presented with a special inscribed plaque by Paul Bridge, Chief Executive, Ola Akinfe, Executive Director of Asset Management, and Jackie Thomas, Executive Director of Housing Management. They also received £300 each to spend on community projects of their choice.
Voluntary activities celebrated included working with young people, supporting elderly people and tirelessly campaigning and participating in residents’ associations. In addition, the Special Achievement award went to Wood Green resident, Angie Buzzacott. She said: “I’ve worked on behalf of tenants with Haringey Council and Homes for Haringey for over 18 years. It has been a busy and enjoyable learning curve. This award means so much. I didn’t expect to get it. I’m so humbled and very honoured.”
This year the ceremony included a category to honour the work of resident liaison officers from the Decent Homes programme. The overall award went to South Tottenham based Olivia Dunne, from the Apollo Group.

Resident Volunteers Awards 2009
The first ever Rewarding Resident Volunteers event, organised by Homes for Haringey’s Resident Involvement team, was held at the Civic Centre on Monday 23 March. Eight individuals/groups were selected from a total of 23 nominations. They are:
- Tammy Barbour and Tracey Goddard of the Ferry Lane Action Group (FLAG)
- Hortense Kolade Estate Monitor and Advocate at Northumberland Park
- David and Kay Singh from Broadwater Farm Residents’ Association;
- Caroline Mottram, Advocate at Mountview Court
- Margaret Clarke from The Sandbunker Youth Centre
- Gwenda Owens from Campbell Court Residents’ Association
- Milton, Willow and West Green Residents’ Association
- Edgecot Grove Residents’ Association.
- Bob and Maureen Towerzey from The Sandlings estate were chosen for a Special Award for Outstanding Commitment and Achievement.
All the winners were presented with a special plaque by Paul Bridge, Chief Executive, and Ola Akinfe, Executive Director of Asset Management, and will be given £300 to spend on community projects of their choice.
