Camspace hosts photo exhibition
Tuesday 3 November 2009
Young people from the Campsbourne estate in Hornsey showed off their artwork to an audience of over 100 visitors at a photographic exhibition held recently (October 30).
The montages - accompanied by descriptive sound bites - were on display in the local community centre, Camspace. The images were taken by young residents aged between 10 and 19 under the supervision of celebrity photographer, Ray Burmiston.
The exhibition theme 'past, present, future' was developed as the project included an intergenerational aspect, with young and older residents (from Bedale House sheltered accommodation scheme) on Eastfield Road and its neighbouring streets getting together to build relationships through photography.
Over 50 young people got involved. The sessions took place during the youth club and summer youth programme, held at Campsbourne Infant School and Camspace. During the intergenerational sessions, eight young people and a similar number of older people worked together in pairs.
A selection of 60 portraits taken by Ray of young and older people from the estate were also on display, along with screen-projected images. Ray offered his skills and assistance to the project voluntarily.

Rachel Fell, Youth Development Officer, said: “Campsbourne photography project 'past, present and future' was a great method for empowering young people to express themselves and their views of the estate through photography."
Angela Dolan whose two children, Luke and Matthew, took part added: “The boys are creative anyway so this was a great summer project for them. I am really happy they got involved. The pictures taken are heartwarming, particularly one of Luke pictured beside an older man. It was a great community bonding experience for all the children involved and the older people. Now they all say hello and look out for each other.”
Mavis Alleyne, 75 from the Bedale House scheme, said she was flattered to be invited to take part with the scheme. “It was good to work with the younger residents and get to know them individually, I am very happy with the resulting images.”
