Broadwater Farm visited by Chinese delegates

Monday 29 October 2007

A group of Chinese visitors including architects and academics spent the morning at Broadwater Farm recently as part of a UK-China affordable housing programme. The visit was about sharing the experience of delivering low-cost housing for low-income urban groups, between China and the UK.

The group, including two academics, one journalist and two British Council guests were hosted by the UCL Bartlett School of Planning.

Head of Tenancy Management South, Paul Dennehy, led the delegation around the whole of the estate including the health and children’s centre.

He said:  “They found Broadwater Farm particularly interesting and drew a lot from the UK experience.  Over a period of three hours we covered everything from social and economic demographics to the relationship between local, central government and Homes for Haringey, as well as funding and the structure of our governance.

Dr Nick Gallent from University College London said: “The Chinese delegates are particularly interested in the ongoing transformation of Broadwater Farm, especially how different social projects and active community involvement have contributed to greater cohesion between families of different backgrounds and cultures. They recognise that strong communities are the key to the success of this type of regeneration and renewal project”.
