Bedale House celebrates Community Day
Monday 21 September 2009
The Mayor of Haringey joined residents from a Hornsey supported housing scheme, Bedale House, to unveil their new barbecue and refurbished garden furniture. Cllr Bernice Vanier opened the garden party, held on Friday 18 September, as part of the fifth annual Community Day hosted by contractors, Wates Living Space. Over 50 residents were treated to a sizzling barbecue, music, refreshments and entertainment.

In preparation for the day, one local volunteer, Josh Buzec (17) was taken on to work with the Wates team. He spent the former part of the week painting and restoring cast-iron and wooden garden furniture, building a new permanent barbecue and transforming the large communal garden. He has since been offered a full time apprenticeship with Wates. Materials used in building the barbecue also included brickssalvaged fromdecent homes work carried out on the estate. The 180ft garden has also been decked out with a range of planters, shrubs and winter pansies.
Paul Bridge, Chief Executive, Homes for Haringey said: “Wates very kindly dedicated this year’s community day to the residents of Bedale House. We appreciate the effort taken in involving local residents in community projects that make a real difference to their environment. The garden looks wonderful and will benefit the local neighbourhood.”
Community days are designed to make a real difference to the communities in which Wates works. More than 1,600 members of staff were released from building sites across the UK on Friday to take on major projects that benefit local communities. Bedale House tenant, Josephine Matticks (see above with the Mayor of Haringey), 84, added: “It was a lovely day, the sun was shining and the barbecue was tasty.”
