Apprentices construct kitchen for elders

Thursday 3 February 2011

To celebrate this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, 11 Homes for Haringey’s apprentices will construct a brand new kitchen for residents living in a Sheltered Housing scheme in Tottenham.

From 7th until the 11th February 2011, plumbers, electricians and carpenters will take on the mammoth task of stripping and converting a 15 x 12 ft storage space area. They will use their plumbing, carpentry, electrics, plastering and tiling skills to transform the ground floor area into a fully equipped, modern communal kitchen to meet the needs of the 27 residents living at Coombes House, North Tottenham.

The apprentices, seven men and four women, are at various stages in their career. Some will complete their three-year apprenticeships later this year. During the week, two apprentices will also attend Apprenticeship Information Fairs being held at the Enfield and Tottenham sites of the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London

Organised by National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), the National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the talents and skills of apprentices. It will also show employers the value of investing in an apprenticeship programme.

Paul Bridge, Chief Executive, Homes for Haringey said: “We are very proud of our apprentices and this is a chance for them to show off what they can do. Once the kitchen is installed, residents can socialise more easily by using the kitchen and organising barbecues in the communal garden.”
