housing benefit

Housing benefit is an amount of money that you can claim from the council if you are:

  • on a low income, and
  • paying rent.

How does it work?

Housing benefit is paid directly into your rent account. The amount of help you can get depends on your income and the size of your family.

Note that housing benefit does not cover water rates or heating costs – you will always have to pay these yourself.
